I have had a very productive week and somehow I managed to finish two pieces!  The one above is entitled Fireflies and I have loved the image of this little one from the day I found it.  I decided he would be interesting on a dark background and I can see him as a companion piece to Willa.  Fairies and fireflies.  The fun thing about this pieces is that I used a touch of specialty paint on the fireflies and in the darkness, they glow.  I tried to capture this but my camera was not cooperative or the light hadn't recharged the glow paint enough.  You'll just have to take my word for it.  Below is a close up of one of the fireflies...

The second piece I finished will have to wait until next week to be unveiled.  I am doing my own spin on Renaissance Art thanks to my recent trip to Italy.

Speaking of Italy, I found a little flea market in Sienna and purchased several items to include in future pieces.  The Renaissance pieces will most likely be the destination of some of this newly collected Italian ephemera...

This hand written book of music was one of my finds.  I love the ragged edges of the sheets and the calligraphy is amazing.

This book is also a student's book of music and also contains some interesting calligraphy.  The weight of the paper is slightly heavier and it should add some interest to my collages.

The book below is from the 16th century.  It was a bit more expensive than the above items as I found it in a little antique store but I still plan to apply it to my art.  As you can see, it is quite damaged and so I have no guilt about using it in my work.  The religious tone is obvious and will also be included in the new series.

And so, I am off to do some local treasure hunting.  Next week I will share some exciting news regarding a couple of new shows that are in the planning phase.

Back in the Studio

After taking a much-needed break to recharge my imagination, I am back in the studio this week.  The past week has been spent in search of new inspiration and I have done a bit of experimentation.  I have several new ideas to explore.  The above image was taken during an early morning bicycle ride on a nearby trail.  It was already quite warm, despite the time of day, so Arturo & I took a break to explore...

(My newest piece)

I am still floating on air after my first solo-show at ArtCapsule Gallery in Oxford.  The night could not have gone better.  I received a ton of positive feedback regarding my pieces and this feedback was bolstered by a good number of sales.  Many of my original pieces sold on Friday night as well as several of my Artist Proofs.  This show will run through July 28th and I hope others will check it out.  I welcome all comments and questions.  Feel free to post them on my blog.   For now here are a few pics.

Exhibition

I really think my work is best viewed in person.  The three dimensional aspect of my pieces is difficult to fully capture in a low-res photo.  With that said, I hope to see you all at the gallery.  - Details to come.

New Gallery NewsI

 I have been wanting to get to this post for a week but haven't had access to the pics until now.  

I attended an artist's  reception on Sunday, May 1st for a month long show entitled The First and The Last. 

 Last things first.  The Last is in reference to Margot of Margot’s Gallery in downtown Oxford.  This, sadly, is her last show as she has sold her gallery and is planning to spend more time on her artistic endeavors.  She will be missed, but I know that her time spent on art will be fruitful.  She is very talented and I admire her work.  Arturo & I purchased two to hang in our home and will most certainly add to our collection over time.

The First refers to the first show at the gallery for new owner, Rob.  He made a great first impression when he surprised Margot (and everyone else) with a cake  depicting a 3-D copy of one of her masks from the Sweet and Savory Bake Shop  located right next door. Well done.

The new gallery will be called Art Capsule.  This link will take you to Rob's blog where he is chronicling the emergence of his vision.  I am excited to be working with the gallery as it hosts my first individual art show, Shadowplay.   This is my big news and I  have been holed up in my studio creating some new pieces in time for the show.  I will post the details as well as a few peeks at new work along the way.

In the meantime, these pieces are currently on exhibit in the gallery along with numerous other works from talented local artists.  This exhibit runs through the month of May.
